Almost all New York City ATMs are linked to a national network that most likely includes your bank at home.
Cirrus (tel. 800/424-7787; www.mastercard.com/atm) and PLUS (tel. 800/843-7587; www.visa.com/atms) are the two most popular networks; check the back of your ATM card to see which network your bank belongs to (most banks belong to both these days).
The citys biggest banks are Citibank, Chase, Fleet, and HSBC, which belong to both networks.
In the most popular Manhattan neighborhoods, theres a bank with ATM machines on every other corner or so.
The only places you may have some difficulty are in more far-flung neighborhoods, like the far East Village or far uptown in Harlem.
If you dont easily spot an ATM, use the 800 numbers to find one in your location.
New Yorks Consumer Affairs chief has tried to ward off additional ATM charges for consumers, but it has proven to be a losing battle. Expect to pay $1 to $2 each time you withdraw money from an ATM, in addition to what your home bank charges.
Try to stay away from commercial machines, like those in hotel lobbies and corner delis, which often charge $3 or more per transaction.
